Rosebud transfer station will help trash handling

• ROSEBUD, S.D. (AP) -- Officials say a new solid waste transfer station will improve trash collection for residents of the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in south-central South Dakota.
• The U.S. Agriculture Department provided loans and grants for the transfer station. USDA officials joined tribal officials recently for the station's grand opening.
• Elsie Meeks, USDA state director for Rural Development, says the transfer station will enhance the environment and cleanliness of the area.
• Officials say a central transfer station located near where most of the area's garbage is generated will allow the tribe to minimize trips to the landfill located in the northeast corner of the reservation. They say it also will ease strain on equipment, minimize dumpster overflow and reduce illegal dumping.
• Garbage is hauled from 20 reservation communities to the landfill.

SD Ag Department holding final week of forums

• PRESHO, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Department of Agriculture is hosting its final week of forums focusing on the next generation of farmers and ranchers.
• The sessions titled "The Next Generation of Livestock Production" are scheduled for Tuesday evening in Presho, Wednesday in Winner and Thursday in Chamberlain. A forum was held in Miller on Monday.
• Farmers and ranchers are invited to talk about the opportunities and challenges in livestock production and the impact of agriculture to rural communities and statewide revenues and infrastructure.

South Dakota State women to face South Carolina

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota State women's basketball coach Aaron Johnston says South Carolina will be a tough opponent in the opening round of the NCAA tournament and is glad the game will be played at a neutral site.
• Johnston said South Carolina, the No. 4 seed in the Norfolk Region, is a strong, athletic and physical team that puts a lot of pressure on opponents and causes turnovers. The Jackrabbits also will have to be aggressive on the boards in the first-
