Madison defeats Pine Ridge at Class A

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Madison raced out to an early lead and advanced to the semifinals of the South Dakota Class A basketball tournament with a 70-34 victory over Pine Ridge on Thursday.
• The No. 3 seed Bulldogs (22-2) grabbed a 13-point lead at the end of one period and built a 46-16 halftime advantage. Tyler Wiebe led the way for Madison, finishing with 15 points. Jesse Brown posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Jesse Brown had 10 points and eight rebounds.
• Jeff LeBeau led the Thorpes (14-9) with 16 points.
• Madison shot 44 percent from the field and held Pine Ridge to 33 percent. The Governors out-rebounded Pine Ridge 45-22 and forced 24 turnovers.

2 missing after rescuing boy in Big Sioux River

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Emergency crews were searching the Big Sioux River late Thursday for two adults who went underwater after helping rescue a boy who had fallen into the strong current, authorities said.
• Sioux Falls Fire Chief Jim Sideras said an emergency call came in just after 6 p.m. reporting that a 4-year-old boy had fallen into the river in Falls Park. The caller then said two adults who had tried to rescue the boy went underwater just downriver from the waterfalls.
• A witness at the scene, 21-year-old Napoleon Ducheneaux, said his friend fell into the river while trying to help the boy and a woman. His friend had both the woman and boy by their hands before his hands began sliding, then he just "slipped and disappeared," Ducheneaux said.
• He said the boy emerged downriver minutes later, but that his friend and the woman didn't surface.
• Sideras said rescue crews were working against the river's strong current and large amounts of foam, which firefighters were trying to blow away. He also noted that the water temperature was hovering around freezing.
• Crews were still looking for the two adults as of 10 p.m. Sideras told the Argus
