gram as it is exempt. There was some other good news as well. The government is extending the flexibility in meats and grains requirements through next year as they study the problems facing the school lunch program.
• After talking to other school districts in the area, Schuster estimates that 20 - 30 percent less students are eating lunch at the area schools.
• "It's not just a Groton problem," Schuster said. "It is affecting all the schools."
• The Groton School District has been approached by someone wishing to donate $5,000 in the form of two scholarships. The donor asked if the school could open a broker account to be used to transfer the money, as it would save the donor some money. The money saved could then possibly be added to the amount of the scholarships.
• After some discussion with some financial advisors, the board felt this might be a good idea. The same account could be used by other parties interested in funding scholarships as well. The school district would pay a nominal fee to start the account.
• The resignation of Scott Thorson as the assistant wrestling coach, effective for the 2013-2014 school year was approved. Thorson has been a coach for 38 years.
• The board also approved the school calendar for the 2013-2014 school year. Classes will start on August 22, 2013 and the scheduled final day will be May 16, 2014. The back to school picnic and open house will be held on Tuesday August 20.
• No decision has been made yet on when the final day of school will be for the 2013 school year.
• "I hesitate to set a date for the final day of classes," Schuster said. "Its still March, we could have more snow days yet."
