Leaking roofs a concern at GHS

• Leaking roofs in the high school is raised some questions for the Groton School Board during their Monday meeting. Leaks have been appearing in the 1968 addition, especially were the new sky lights were installed and in the hall way along the old gym and in the band room.
• "There are some days when we have to have buckets to catch the drips," Groton Superintendent Laura Schuster said. "When it starts to warm up, we could really have water running,"
• A study was done on the school roof in 2006. That study broke up the roof into three sections, at that time the roof over the '69 addition was expected to last for six more years.
• "We are at that six year mark," Schuster said. "It fact we are going on seven years."
• The question now facing the board is should they repair the areas that are leaking or wait and repair the entire section of roof?
• Schuster plans on meeting with HKG Architect Dean Marske to discuss the options prior to the next school board meeting.
• It is estimated that the school district will lose 16 percent of their funding for Title 1 and about five percent for other title and special education funding due to the Federal Sequestration.
• "We will have to go with these numbers to plan out the budget," Schuster said. "We can always tweak them later."
