Wintry weather persists in parts of the Dakotas

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Spring is officially a little more than a week ago, but wintry weather persists in parts of the Dakotas.
• The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory Tuesday for an area from northwest North Dakota to northeast South Dakota. Strong winds blew snow around, causing problems for motorists.
• North Dakota transportation officials advised no travel in the northwest because of the conditions and urged motorists in other areas to use caution. The McKenzie County Sheriff's Office late Monday said a stretch of state Highway 73 was closed due to icy conditions and multiple stranded vehicles.

SD farmers urged to check for Japanese beetles

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- An entomologist says South Dakota farmers need to check their corn and soybean fields this year for Japanese beetles.
• South Dakota State University Extension entomologist Kelley J. Tilmon says Japanese beetles are up to a half-inch long with metallic green and copper colors. She says the introduced pest was first found in the U.S. in New Jersey in 1916, but is becoming common in the Midwest.
• Tilmon says the Japanese beetle has been detected in several South Dakota counties, particularly in the southeastern part of the state.
• The entomologist says the beetles eat soybean leaves and also feed on corn silks.
• Tilmon says most problems with Japanese beetles have been in gardens so far, but farmers also should check for the bug in their crops.

SDSU, USD tip off in women's Summit championship

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- It's an in-state battle Tuesday for the Summit League women's basketball championship and a guaranteed trip to the NCAA tournament.
• The South Dakota State Jackrabbits beat IPFW 86-59 in the one of the semifinal matchups on Monday. Ashley Eide scored 16 points to lead five Jackrabbits in double figures for top-seeded South Dakota State.
