sentenced to 90 days in jail. • Mark Grabowski of Livingston County's Hartland Township was sentenced Thursday in Circuit Court in Howell. The 53-year-old earlier pleaded guilty to unlawful retention of a child by a parent. • Grabowski told the court that he took his son to protect him. Judge David Reader told Grabowski: "What you did was just wrong." • Authorities say Grabowski took his 11-year-old son out of state in August without the permission of the boy's mother. • The FBI found Grabowski and his son following a wide-ranging search on Sept. 7 on a hunting ranch in Platte, S.D. •
SD Legislature works on budget at end of session
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota lawmakers are working to pass a state budget as the main run of this year's legislative session comes to an end. • The budget is the biggest remaining issue facing the Legislature. • The Joint Appropriations Committee hoped to finish work on the $4.1 billion spending plan by midday so the House and Senate can pass it later Friday, the final day of the session's main run. • The lawmakers will return to the Capitol for a final day on March 25, when they will consider any vetoes issued by Gov. Dennis Daugaard. •
Dept. of Labor issues warning about SD bank
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation is warning people that a bank operating on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is not licensed, chartered or regulated by the Division of Banking. • State Division of Banking Director Bret Afdahl says Free Lakota Bank lists its address as a post office box in Pine Ridge, but the bank has no physical presence there. The bank does not have FDIC insurance. • The Oglala Sioux Tribe says the bank is not licensed or connected to the tribe. • A phone number for Free Lakota Bank was not immediately located. A company representative did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. •
