SD School of Mines football joining GNAC

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology say it has accepted an invitation to become an affiliate member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
• The Hardrockers will join the NCAA Division II conference beginning with the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The school joins Central Washington, Simon Fraser, Western Oregon, Dixie State, Humboldt State and Azusa Pacific.
• Each of the seven institutions will play a six-game, single-round robin conference schedule. In addition, the six current members will also play three non-conference games against three of the other current GNAC teams.
• South Dakota Mines is in its third and final year of transition to full NCAA Division II membership.
• The school will be eligible for post-season play and various academic and athletic awards starting in the fall of 2013.

SD-led team discovers new dinosaur species

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A team led by a South Dakota School of Mines and Technology assistant professor has discovered a new species of plant-eating dinosaurs that was a food source for an extinct relative of the crocodile.
• Clint Boyd and two colleagues from other universities published fossil evidence of a crocodyliform feeding on small ornithopod dinosaurs. The findings, published this week in the academic journal PLOS ONE, are significant because dinosaurs are typically depicted as the dominant species, he said.
• Small dinosaurs normally had worry about theropod dinosaurs like raptors or the T. rex, so the discovery adds a new dimension, Boyd said.
• "You had your dominant riverine carnivores, the crocodyliforms, attacking these herbivores as well, so they kind of had it coming from all sides," he said.
