• Abeln started his new company a year ago, but has long had an interest in the building trade. He worked with Dick Seurer while growing up and took classes with Don Donley in high school. At one time he had aspirations of attending college to be an architect. All that changed the summer of 2003 when an accident left him paralyzed from the neck down.
• "It took me a few years (after the accident) to figure out what I wanted to do," Abeln said. "Not all the areas that I was interested in would allow me to do it from a wheelchair."
• With the help of Vocational Rehab in Aberdeen, Abeln was able to get the special equipment he needed to start up BDA Home Designs. The professional grade software and special tools, such as voice activation and a track ball mouse that allows Abeln to use a mouth tool to move objects around on the computer screen, permits Abeln to design the blueprints on the computer screen. Once the design is completed, Abeln can print off the blueprints, as well as a complete materials list. When working with a lumber yard, Abeln can also get the prices of the materials and
