SD students display research work in state Capitol

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A dozen undergraduate students from South Dakota colleges and universities will display their research work in the state Capitol in Pierre this week.
• The students will present their projects to state lawmakers and the public Wednesday in the Capitol rotunda.
• Jack Warner, the state Board of Regents executive director, says South Dakota's emphasis on research in the past decade has given students some research opportunities that were previously unavailable.
• The display features students from public, private and tribal colleges in South Dakota.
• Students taking part are from South Dakota State University, the University of South Dakota, the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Black Hills State University, Northern State University, Dakota State University, the University of Sioux Falls, Oglala Lakota College and Sinte Gleska University.

How automatic budget cuts could affect SD

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The White House compiled the numbers from federal agencies and its own budget office. The numbers reflect the impact of the cuts this year. Unless Congress acts by Friday, $85 billion in cuts are set to take effect from March-September.
• As to whether states could move money around to cover shortfalls, the White House said that depends on state budget structures and the specific programs. The White House did not have a list of which states or programs might have flexibility.
• EDUCATION:
• --About $1.16 million in funding for primary and second education, putting around 20 teacher and aide jobs at risk. In addition about 1,000 fewer students would be served and approximately 10 fewer schools would receive funding.
• --About $1.78 million in funds for about 20 teachers, aides, and staff who help children with disabilities.
• -- Aid to help about 90 low-income students finance the costs of college as well as work-study jobs for about 10 students
