3 SD cities get vehicle registration terminals

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Division of Motor Vehicles has installed self-service terminals for vehicle registration in Brookings, Mitchell and Watertown.
• Officials say the terminals are being placed in additional cities because the initial machines placed in Rapid City and Sioux Falls were a big success.
• The latest 24-hour self-service terminals were placed at the Hy-Vee Food Stores in Brookings and Watertown and the County Fair Food Store in Mitchell.
• Each station is fully automated and dispenses license renewal tags on the spot. A $2 convenience fee per vehicle is assessed.
• New terminals are scheduled to be installed in the next few weeks at the Rushmore Mall in Rapid City, Kessler's Food in Aberdeen and the Hy-Vee Food Store in Yankton.

100th anniversary of discovery of Verendrye Plate

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Saturday marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the Verendrye (Ver-en-DREE') Plate near Fort Pierre.
• The South Dakota State Historical Society says eight documents relating to the history of the Verendrye Expedition and the Verendrye Plate discovery are available on the South Dakota Digital Archives. The online collection features brochures, photographs and firsthand accounts of the discovery and history.
• French-Canadian brothers Francois and Louis Joseph Verendrye were trying to discover a route to "the Western Sea" when they claimed the land for France on March 30, 1743 atop a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near present-day Fort Pierre.
• The Verendrye Plate is on display at the Cultural Heritage Center museum. It provides evidence of the location of the expedition and its journey through present-day South Dakota.

SDSU professor studies ice from Antarctica

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- A professor at South Dakota State University is looking at ice from Antarctica to better understand climate change.
