Blizzard Warning

.. Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 9 PM this evening to noon CST Monday...

* timing... snow will move into northeast South Dakota and west central Minnesota tonight and persist through Monday. Snow will be heavy at times... especially on Sunday.

* Winds/visibility... north winds will increase to 20 to 35 mph through the day Sunday across northeast South Dakota and west central Minnesota. Gusts will exceed 40 mph. Winds will increase across the James River Valley Sunday morning... but are not expected to increase significantly until Sunday evening over far eastern South Dakota and west central Minnesota. These winds will persist through Monday morning before diminishing. Widespread blowing and drifting snow is expected Sunday through Monday morning... with near zero visibility. Travel will become very hazardous... if not impossible.

* Snow/ice accumulations... amounts will range from 8 to 15 inches across northeast South Dakota and west central Minnesota. The highest totals are expected across the glacial lakes and higher terrain areas of northeast South Dakota. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible at times under any heavy snow bands. Any areas that receive over a foot of snow are likely to experience significant drifting of snow Sunday night through Monday morning once the stronger winds arrive.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions... making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel. If you must travel... have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded... stay with your vehicle.
