SDSU inks 17 on national signing day

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota State has added 17 high school players to its football roster for the upcoming season.
• Head football coach John Stiegelmeier made the announcement Wednesday, which was national signing day for several college sports.
• SDSU added two standout linebackers.
• Mikias Alipate (mick-EYE'-iss all-ih-PAH'-tay) was averaging 13.5 tackles per game during his senior year at Minnesota's Academy of Holy Angels before suffering a season-ending injury. Linebacker Jesse Bobbit earned first-team all-state honors in Illinois at Palatine High School.
• The group includes two South Dakota players -- Dell Rapids High School linebacker Cole Langer and Hamlin High School defensive end Mason Leiseth (LIE-seth), of Hayti.
• South Dakota State finished the 2012 season with a 9-4 overall record and made its second appearance in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

SD Senate committee endorses gun rights measure

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota could oppose any federal attempts to restrict the constitutional right to bear arms, under a measure endorsed Wednesday by a legislative committee.
• The measure passed 8-1 by the State Affairs Committee, a Republican-controlled panel that includes Senate leaders from both parties, also would direct the state attorney general to fight in court against any reduction in Second Amendment rights. The bill next goes to the full Senate.
• The bill's main sponsor, Sen. Larry Rhoden, R-Union Center, said the measure does not seek to nullify federal laws because the U.S. Constitution says federal law takes precedence over state law. The bill instead expresses the Legislature's belief that the constitution prevents the federal government from restricting gun ownership, he said.
• "It drives a stake down in our state statutes to define what we hold dear in our Second Amendment," Rhoden told the committee.
• The measure, containing findings by the Legislature, says the Second Amendment prevents federal initiatives to restrict gun ownership or the right of self-defense.
