South Dakota's cattle inventory up 5 percent

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota's cattle inventory heading into 2013 is up 5 percent from the previous year.
• The U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service says the state had 3.85 million head of cattle and calves on hand on Jan. 1. That's a 4 percent increase from two years ago.
• Cows and heifers that have calved totaled 1.78 million head, up 5 percent from a year ago.
• Beef cows totaled 1.69 million head, up 5 percent from a year ago. Milk cows are at 92,000 head, up 2,000 head from last year.
• The total cattle on feed for the slaughter market on Jan. 1 was 300,000 head, down 20,000 head from one year ago.

Sanford plans $1.8M clinic in MN city of Bagley

• FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- Dakotas-based Sanford Health is planning a $1.8 million clinic in the Minnesota city of Bagley this year.
• The new clinic will replace one attached to the Sanford Bagley Medical Center, nearly tripling available clinic space. The Bemidji Pioneer reports that it will be built by a local economic development agency, and leased and maintained by Sanford.
• Sanford Health bought Bagley-based Clearwater Health Services a year ago.
• Sanford is based in Fargo, N.D., and Sioux Falls, S.D. It bills itself as the largest not-for-profit rural health care provider in the country, with locations in 126 communities in eight states.

Midwest economic index suggests slow growth

• OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Slow economic growth is expected in nine Midwest and Plains states over the next three to six months, according to a monthly survey of business leaders released Friday.
• The overall economic index for the region improved to 53.2 in January, after registering 49.5 in December and 48 in November. The survey of business leaders and supply managers uses a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Any score above 50 suggests the economy will expand in the coming months, but the report's author said January's scores were a tepid mix.
