ger class sizes, fewer paraprofessionals, and so much more.  We have been starving the schools and it is time to repair the damage and get on with the work of moving education forward. 
• There are many other important topics for rural South Dakotans.  We will be working on drainage legislation, changes to grain buyer rules and regulations in light of the recent failure of Anderson Seeds,  and we will advocate for creating opportunities to invest in research to brand our state as truly the most favorable research state in the country!

Rep. Dennert's Column

• The first week of the 88th Legislative Session of the South Dakota Legislature has quickly come to a close.  I am proud and humbled to serve you in District 1 which includes parts of northern Brown County, Marshall, Roberts, and Day County. This is my third term in the House of Representatives.  As all first weeks of the Session, it is an especially hectic time.  Most committee work was confined to state agencies' presentations.  I serve on the House Agriculture and House Transportation committees.  The Agriculture committee received a report on the progress to control the Mountain Pine Beetle in the Black Hills and the proposed uranium mining project situated north of Edgemont.  A number of bills have been introduced in the House, so future committee meetings should begin work on hearing those bills.

• On the first day of session, the Governor gave his State of the State address, highlighting stewardship as the foundation of his administration.  He further commented on the ongoing programs and projects of the State.  I personally was disappointed in the lack of mention of education and Medicaid funding, as well as any plans for economic development.  In conversations with other legislators, both Democrat and Republican, it will be up to the legislature to further enhance and fund these three very important areas of state government that affect so many South Dakotans.
• The Department of Social Services presented information that it has on the expansion of Medicaid in accordance with the Affordable Care Act.  States have the
