Shooting death in Rapid City treated as homicide

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating the shooting death of a 33-year-old man found in a motel parking lot in Rapid City as a homicide.
• Rapid City police spokeswoman Tarah Heupel (HY'-puhl) says Eustacio Marrufo was pronounced dead at the scene at the South Dakota Rose Inn shortly after 7 p.m. Monday. Officers were called to the scene for a report of shots fired.
• Heupel says Marrufo was recently known to be living in Rapid City and in Kansas.
• Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that Marrufo and the shooter were acquaintances.
• Detectives from the police department and the Pennington County Sheriff's Office are continuing their investigation.
• An autopsy is scheduled for later Tuesday.

SD House elects Rep. Brian Gosch as speaker

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Republican Rep. Brian Gosch of Rapid City has been elected speaker of the South Dakota House of Representatives.
• As South Dakota's legislative session started Tuesday, the House also elected Rep. Dean Wink of Howes as speaker pro tem, which puts him next in line to be speaker in two years.
• The Senate elected Sen. Corey Brown of Gettysburg to be president pro tem. That means he will preside over the Senate when Lieutenant Gov. Matt Michels is absent.

Death of man in Sioux Falls labeled a homicide

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A suspicious death in Sioux Falls is now being investigated as a homicide.
• Fifty-year-old Cresencio Conde-Vargas was found dead in his home on Monday. Police Lt. Blaine Larsen says the man had head trauma but no guns or knives were used. He also says authorities believe Conde-Vargas knew his attacker. No arrest has been made.
• Police responded to Conde-Vargas' home on Monday afternoon to check on his well-being when he did not show up for work, and found him dead. Larsen says he
