• "I'm still hopeful," U.S. Sen. John Thune told the AP on Sunday night. "Every time we have a discussion, more progress is made. It's unfortunate it's taken this long."
• Thune said no further votes were expected Sunday but that "we will all get together again tomorrow."

Protest of Whiteclay beer sales planned on Monday

• WHITECLAY, Neb. (AP) -- Another protest over alcohol sales in the Nebraska town of Whiteclay is planned for New Year's Eve.
• Two Native American groups said Sunday that they will try to prevent alcohol sold in Nebraska from reaching the Pine Ridge reservation where alcohol is banned.
• The Oglala Lakota Women and Deep Green Resistance groups say they will set up a blockade on the reservation's southern border starting at 9 p.m. Monday.
• Alcohol sales in the town of Whiteclay have long been a concern for the Oglala Sioux Tribe because alcoholism and poverty are rampant on the reservation. The town of roughly a dozen people sold the equivalent of 4.3 million 12-ounce cans of beer last year.

SD deputy injured in car wreck; man faces charges

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Sioux Falls police say that a man faces charges after he crashed into a Minnehaha County Sheriff's patrol car.
• Authorities say that one of the two deputies involved in the wreck was injured. The wreck occurred about 2 a.m. Sunday as the deputies drove south on Six Mile Road near Rice Street.
• Police say a northbound Mercury Sable swerved into the oncoming lane. The deputies' vehicle was hit on the driver's side, forcing it off the road and into a ditch.
• KELO-TV reports that the driver of the Sable is charged with driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving and possession of drug paraphernalia. He and his passenger were treated for what authorities say were not life-threatening injuries.
• Deputy-in-field-training Derek Gulbrandson sustained minor injuries to his left knee.
