• In June, U.S. District Judge Karen Schreier ruled that a third provision of the law could go into effect starting July 1. That provision requires doctors who perform abortions to first assess women to determine if they have been coerced into getting abortions or are at risk of suffering psychological problems if they undergo the procedure.

Report of gun leads to SD school lockdown

• ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) -- Social media posts and a report of a gun at a high school parking lot led to a lockdown of the Aberdeen School District on Friday morning.
• Aberdeen Police Capt. Neil Bittner tells KSFY-TV that reports a gun Aberdeen Central High School parking were unfounded. Bittner says a student reported seeing a person in a tan car in the parking lot with a either a rifle or a shotgun.
• Aberdeen School District Superintendent Gary Harms says the administrative lockdown also was a result of some social media messages by students. He says all public schools were in lockdown for about an hour on Friday morning.
• Bittner says said there were no other details relating to the online comments.

A sweeping bargain seemingly out of reach, Obama calls for scaled-back deal to avoid 'cliff'

• WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama has throttled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain with Republicans. Instead, he's calling for a scaled-back measure sufficient to prevent the government from careening off the "fiscal cliff" in January by extending tax cuts for most taxpayers and forestalling a painful set of agency budget cuts.
• In a White House appearance Friday, Obama also called on Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.
• Obama's announcement was a recognition that chances for a larger agreement before year's end have probably collapsed. It also suggested that any chance for a smaller deal may rest in the Senate, particularly after the collapse of a plan by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to permit tax rates to rise on million-dollar-plus incomes.
