Sanford getting $2.4M for heart care upgrades

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Dakotas-based Sanford Health is getting $2.4 million from a charitable trust established by the late hotel and real estate baroness Leona Helmsley to upgrade heart care at hospitals in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen.
• The money from the Helmsley Charitable Trust will help pay for about half of a robotic system to place catheters, stents and angioplasty balloons.
• The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved the procedure. The equipment is to be installed in the first half of next year.
• Sanford Health is based in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Fargo, N.D.

Releases into Missouri River will be increased

• OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- The amount of water flowing into the lower Missouri River will be increased this week because of concerns about colder temperatures, but the increase isn't likely to boost the level of the Mississippi River downstream.
• The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it plans to gradually increase the amount of water it releases out of Gavins Point dam on the South Dakota-Nebraska border to 18,000 cubic feet per second by Thursday.
• That's an increase of 4,000 cubic feet per second over current levels.
• The corps' Jody Farhat says the change is needed because ice will begin forming on the river with the cold weather and reduce the flow. The additional water will make sure the river remains high enough for cities that rely on its water.

Avera Health adds Pierre hospital to network

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Avera Health is buying St. Mary's Healthcare Center in Pierre in a merger that will give the Sioux Falls-based health network a stronger foothold in central South Dakota, the companies said.
• When the deal takes effect in the new year, Avera will have 31 hospitals in five states. The deal includes: St. Mary's 60-bed hospital in Pierre; a 10-bed affiliate hospital in nearby Gettysburg; a nursing home and senior apartments in Pierre; and facilities in Gettysburg for long-term care and Alzheimer's patients.
• Terms of the sale were not disclosed. St. Mary's has $51 million annually in revenue, according to spokeswoman Amanda Bacon. Avera vice president Daryl Thuringer says his company has annual revenue of $2.6 billion.
