Rosebud Hospital earns baby-friendly status

• ROSEBUD, S.D. (AP) -- The Indian Health Service hospital on the Rosebud Indian Reservation has been named the first baby-friendly hospital in South Dakota.
• The hospital is also the first IHS hospital to earn the designation, which promotes breastfeeding.
• The World Health Organization and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund administer the baby-friendly initiative. Hospitals that achieve the status are committed to promoting and protecting breastfeeding at all stages.
• Clifton Kenon, Jr. is the maternal child health program manager for Aberdeen Area Indian Health Service. He says the staff's dedication to protecting breastfeeding is evident.
• Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius visited the hospital recently. She pointed to its designation as an innovative approach to overcoming health disparities in Indian Country.
• The hospital's initiative started as a campaign to decrease childhood obesity.

Study examines programming at Pine Ridge school

• PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) -- Representatives from a New York-based consulting firm visited a school on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation as part of a U.S. Department of Education research study examining after-school and summer programming.
• The Red Cloud Indian School was one of 15 schools across the nation chosen to take part in the Department of Education study looking into the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
• The Manhattan Strategy Group interviewed Red Cloud administrators and representatives from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology about programming on Tuesday and Wednesday. The School of Mines offers summer camps to the reservation youth.
• The information provided by the School of Mines and Red Cloud Indian School will be used in a national guide.
