Safe-Route-To-School gets another look

The Safe-Route-to-School grant is getting another look. The Groton School board approved the fourth revision of the route at Monday's school board meeting.
• The Safe-Route-to-School grant helps provide Groton students with a path to and from school that is free of hazards and safe from traffic. The routes try to use as much existing sidewalk as possible. The School and the City will continue to refine the routes
• High School Principal Joseph Swan proposed a change to the current policy of reducing student grades for unexcused absences, excessive absences and suspensions. The current policy penalizes students at different rates and times for different offences.  Swan's proposal would clean up the policy and make it more consistent. The penalties would be added at semester time and would have the percentage removed based on the number of days missed instead of per incident. The proposal had its first reading and will be voted on at the next meeting.
• A new digital sign moved one step closer to approval as the board moved to approve their commitment to pay $10,000 toward the cost of the sign. The sign is a joint project between the school, City of Groton and the Chamber of Commerce. The project calls for the sign to have a modem so that the sign can be programmed from anywhere in town. There are a couple of locations being looked at for the sign; the preferred location would be as close to the corner of highways 12 and 37 as possible.
