Columbia man fined for not checking his traps

•  Failure to check his traps on a regular basis, has cost a Columbia man $3,786 in fines and fees. Kerry L. Hansen pleaded guilty to six counts of failing to properly check his muskrat traps. He also received a 30 day suspended jail term and will be on probation for six months.
• State law requires trappers to check their traps at least every two days to ensure that trapped animals do not suffer and that their equipment is working properly.
• Court documents indicate that in exchange for his guilty plea, Hanson's 68 other counts of failure to check his traps and two counts of trapping muskrats out of season were dismissed.
• The charges, all misdemeanors, stem from incidents in 2011 and 2012, according to court documents. Each count was punishable by as much as 30 days in county jail and a $500 fine.
