• The 67,500-square-foot facility, funded by federal stimulus money, is set to open Jan. 17.
• A wellness team will provide services aimed at preventing the inmates from returning to crime. One program will be headed by the White Buffalo Calf Women's Society, a nonprofit organization that provides shelter and advocacy for domestic violence victims on the reservation. The 26-week class, available for anyone charged with domestic violence, examines why they turned to domestic violence and aims to encourage healthy relationships, said LeToy Lunderman, victim services director.
• "Domestic violence is a learned behavior," Lunderman said. "You're not just born to be this way, it's a learned behavior, so they have those individuals in the class kind of acknowledge that and look into their past and maybe something that happened to them."

SDSU says fundraising campaign surpasses goal

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota State University says a fundraising campaign that began in 2007 has surpassed its $220 million goal.
• Officials say the It Starts with STATE campaign that is scheduled to end Dec. 31 has received commitments of nearly $220.5 million as of this week.
• The effort has resulted in 14 capital projects funded largely or exclusively through private gifts. They include the $44 million Avera Health and Science Center and the $100,000 gateway monuments that welcome visitors to campus.
• The SDSU Foundation's Council of Trustees unanimously voted to proceed with the university's campaign in April 2008, just months before the nation entered an economic recession.

Agreement boosts access for American Indian vets

• WASHINGTON (AP) -- Native American military veterans will be able to access health care closer to home thanks to an agreement between the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and the Indian Health Service.
• The agreement allows for Veterans Affairs to reimburse IHS for direct health care
