Rapid City woman sentenced for bank embezzlement

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A Rapid City woman accused of stealing from the bank where she worked has been sentenced to two years in federal prison.
• Authorities say 20-year-old Krissa Shewey stole checks from mailboxes late last year and early this year and cashed them at the bank. She pleaded guilty in June to an embezzlement charge.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says Shewey was ordered to pay $3,300 in restitution.

Company that makes barn kits expanding into SD

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A Nebraska-based company that makes kits for building traditional barns is expanding into South Dakota.
• Sand Creek Post and Beam is expected to create 20 jobs in North Sioux City in the next three years.
• The company makes kits for building custom-designed barns with wooden posts and beams.
• Len Dickinson, the president of Sand Creek Post and Beam, says the company gets most of its timbers from the Black Hills. He says the company is seeking well-trained sales people in the North Sioux City area.
• State and local economic development officials helped the company select a site in North Sioux City for its South Dakota expansion.

SD students get chance to study at underground lab

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota high school seniors and college freshmen can apply for a scholarship and the chance to study next summer at the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory in Lead with researchers from universities across the United States and overseas.
• Up to 12 South Dakota students will be chosen for the Davis-Bahcall Scholarships and the chance to study at the underground lab, if funding allows. Students can apply online at the South Dakota Department of Education's website. The deadline is Jan. 20.
