Groton Area girls starts season with win over Ipswich

• Kylie Hawkins and Courtney Kurtz each had 10 points to lead Groton past Ipswich in girls basketball action played last night in Ipswich, 49-20. Eight girls all added to the tally for Groton with Carly Wheeting having eight, Camille Sippel and Erica Schuster each had four and Regan Lewandowski added three points.
• Groton led at the quarter stops at 13-9, 21-14 and 33-18.
• Three players did all of the scoring for Ipswich with Ansley Sargent having 13 points, Tara Heinz five and Autumn Pitz two.
• Groton made 20 pf 63 field goals for 32 percent, six of nine free throws off of Ipswich's 12 team fouls, had 26 rebounds with Hawkins having six and Sippel and Kurtz each having five; four steals with Kurtz having two, seven assists with Sippel and Kurtz each having three and Groton had five turnovers.
• The junior varsity team edged Ipswich, 35-33, in overtime. Ipswich led at the quarterstops at 11-7, 21-7 and 24-18. The game was tied at 29 at the end of regulation. Groton made four of 12 free throws and made one two-point shot in the overtime while Ipswich made one of two free throws and made one three-point shot.
• Tori Bjerke led Groton with 13 points followed by Carly Wheeting with 10, Ashley Gibbs and Amber Schuster each had four, Jaden Oliver three and Maryn Howard added a free throw.
• Groton will travel to Leola-Frederick on December 8 as the Tigers have a double header.
