SD attorney general warns shoppers to be careful

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says holiday shoppers should use care to avoid common mistakes.
• Jackley says people should check refund and return policies for restrictions and exceptions. He says people buying gift cards should check for fees and expiration dates.
• The attorney general says shoppers also should review warranties, compare prices and check shipping and handling fees for items ordered by mail or on the Internet.
• Jackley also says people shopping on the Internet should avoid using email links. He says those links can appear to be from a known business, when they actually are coming from a different company.

SD scientists to chat from a mile underground

• HURON, S.D. (AP) -- People wanting to see the scientists who are working a mile beneath the earth in a shuttered South Dakota gold mine can take part in a videoconference from the Huron Events Center.
• Attendees will be able to chat Tuesday with scientists situated 4,850 feet underground in the Black Hills, where physicist Jeremy Mock of the University of California, Davis, is working. He's one of the scientists trying to detect dark matter in the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead (leed).
• A University of South Dakota physicist will talk about another experiment, which is looking for one of nature's rarest radioactive rays.
• The free event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. People who register can buy lunch by contacting the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau.
