SD man in toddler death sentenced on drug charges

• WAGNER, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota man arrested after a 2-year-old girl was found dead in his Wagner home has been sentenced to 13 years in prison on drug charges.
• KELO-TV reports (http://bit.ly/Ue5Kla ) that 21-year-old Taylor Cournoyer was sentenced Thursday. He had pleaded guilty earlier to possessing methamphetamine and keeping a place for use or sale of drugs.
• Cournoyer's 29-year-old wife, Laurie, also faces drug counts, along with charges of child abuse and failing to notify law enforcement about a child's death.
• Prosecutors say the girl's body was in a closet in the Cournoyer home for nearly two days in July before anyone reported the death. The Cournoyers were caring for the child but were not her parents.

Drought worsens in SD; relatively stable in ND

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Drought conditions have worsened in South Dakota over the week but remained relatively stable in North Dakota.
• The latest U.S. Drought Monitor map shows 63 percent of South Dakota in the worst two categories of drought, extreme and exceptional. That is up more than 8 percent from last week. All of the state is in some form of drought.
• About 91 percent of North Dakota is in drought, unchanged over the week. The state has no areas in extreme or exceptional drought, and the amount of land in severe drought increased only 3 percent over the week.

SD Dems say Rounds a nice man but wrong for Senate

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Democrats say former Republican Gov. Mike Rounds is a nice person but the wrong man for the U.S. Senate.
• Rounds has announced his intention to run in 2014 for the Senate seat held by Democrat Tim Johnson. Johnson says he had an excellent working relationship with Rounds during Rounds' eight years as governor and says, "I welcome him to the race."
• Johnson hasn't formally announced his intention to seek a fourth term, but he says "I feel great, still have work to do, and I fully intend to put together a winning campaign in the weeks and months ahead."
