1863: The Battle Above the Clouds at Lookout Mountain was fought as part of a three day struggle near Chattanooga, TN. A fog descending into the valley could be seen from atop the mountain and obscured parts of the battlefield. Union forces, which outnumbered Southern troops, fought to a victory.

2001: Thirty-six tornadoes touched down in Alabama, setting a record for the number of tornadoes in a single day for the Crimson State. An F4 destroyed homes in Altoona.
