Study concludes SD 24/7 Sobriety Program works

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- An independent study of South Dakota's sobriety program for drunken drivers concludes it has reduced repeat DUI cases by 12 percent and domestic violence rates by 9 percent.
• The 24/7 Sobriety Program was started in 2005, giving people convicted of alcohol-related crimes a chance to stay out of jail as long as they are monitored daily for alcohol use.
• Attorney General Marty Jackley says the study done by the RAND Corp. was funded by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. He says he hopes the results will open the door to funding for future highway safety projects.

Rapid City man gets jail time for pedestrian fatal

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in Rapid City about a year ago has been sentenced to serve 100 days in jail for drunken driving.
• Fifty-eight-year-old Kenneth Williams initially had been charged with manslaughter in the December 2011 death of 51-year-old Terry Brown. Prosecutors dropped the charge, citing a lack of evidence and the fact that South Dakota law does not consider drunken driving to be reckless by itself.
• Authorities said Williams' blood-alcohol level was almost three times the legal limit for driving. Defense attorney Tim Rensch said Brown was walking in the dark and wearing dark clothing when he tried to cross a street in an area that was not designated as a crosswalk.

• The park's annual buffalo auction is Saturday and features a sales list that includes 43 2-year-old pregnant heifers, and another three that aren't pregnant. Sixty-two bull calves also are for sale.
