Man crashes car into church office in Sioux Falls

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Sioux Falls police have arrested a 73-year-old man they say was driving drunk when he crashed his car into two parked cars and a church office building.
• The crash just before midnight Thursday left a hole in the side of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod office. KELO-TV reports that church officials worked early Friday to patch the hole. A damage estimate wasn't immediately available.
• KSFY-TV reports that a 77-year-old female passenger in the car was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
• Police say charges are pending against the driver.

SD schools eligible for clean-diesel bus grants

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota's public school districts can apply for federal grants to get buses that emit less pollution.
• The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources says it will accept grant applications until Dec. 21. The grants help schools buy new buses outfitted with emission controls or retrofit some buses with emission controls.
• The department has awarded 89 grants totaling about $2.5 million since the Clean Diesel Grant Program started in 2009. The grants have helped school district buy 62 new buses and 14 exhaust-control retrofits.
• Officials say the main goal of the program is to reduce school children's exposure to fine particulates and smog-forming pollution.

ND, SD celebrate 123rd birthdays

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- North Dakota and South Dakota are celebrating their 123rd birthdays.
• The two states entered the Union on Nov. 2, 1889. President Benjamin Harrison signed the admission papers for the two states on that day. North Dakota became the 39th state, and South Dakota the 40th.
• North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger says people should use the day to reflect on the state's past and the prospects for its future. He says he thinks of the pioneers who built the state, and how fortunate it is to have a good economy.
