Turkeys for Families in Need

Statewide (October 30, 2012) - Those looking for a way to give back this Thanksgiving can consider providing a family in need with a Thanksgiving dinner by donating a turkey.  In addition to turkeys, Feeding South Dakota is also requesting donations of boxed mashed potatoes, gravy mixes, canned vegetables, and pies to create a traditional thanksgiving feast for individuals in need.
• Feeding South Dakota is holding its 2nd Annual Statewide Turkey Drive from November 5-9. Turkeys and Thanksgiving fixings will be collected at all three Food Bank sites across the state: Sioux Falls, Pierre, and Rapid City as well as the Sioux Falls Food Pantry.
• Although Feeding South Dakota has a history of collecting and distributing turkeys during the Thanksgiving holiday, the organization formalized the drive last year raising enough money and collecting enough turkeys to feed close to 2,500 families.  This Thanksgiving holiday, Feeding South Dakota hopes to provide 5,000 families with ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving meal.
• "Thanksgiving is a time for all of us to reflect on all of the blessings we have, and this is a great opportunity to give thanks and to give back to others in need," said Matt Gassen, Executive Director of Feeding South Dakota.
