ATV accident in SD kills 10-month-old girl

• ONAKA, S.D. (AP) -- A 10-month-old girl died in an all-terrain vehicle accident in northeastern South Dakota over the weekend.
• The Highway Patrol says Amaya Larson was one of three children on the ATV being driven by 53-year-old Gary Rausch, of Onaka. Authorities say Rausch was turning from a private driveway onto state Highway 20 about 5 p.m. Saturday when he lost control and the ATV rolled onto its side, pinning him and the girl.
• She died at a hospital in Faulkton. Rausch also was taken there with what the patrol says were serious but not life-threatening injuries.
• The other two children on the ATV were not hurt.

SD officials hold seminar on treating pine beetles

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Department of Agriculture is hosting a free seminar this week on the treatment of mountain pine beetles in the Black Hills.
• The meeting in Hill City will help landowners understand options for treating infested trees this fall and winter. Information will be presented by two entomologists, Kurt Allen of the U.S. Forest Service and John Ball of South Dakota State University.
• State forester Ray Sowers says the mountain pine beetles have stopped flying for the year, so now is the time to deal with newly infested trees.
• The seminar will be held at 6 p.m. MDT Thursday at the Slate Creek Grill in Hill City.

Exec director of tribal nonprofit to speak at SDSU

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- The executive director of a well-known nonprofit organization on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation dedicated to helping youth will share plans for the organization's future and other topics during a banquet at South Dakota State University next week.
• Julie Garreau has been the director of the Cheyenne River Youth Project since its inception in 1988. The nonprofit organization in Eagle Butte provides family services and a youth center.
• Garreau will speak on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. as part of SDSU's Common Read event.
