Watertown woman convicted of defrauding government

• ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) -- A Watertown woman faces up to 15 years in prison after being convicted of defrauding the federal government.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says 38-year-old Jana Harford was convicted in federal court in Aberdeen on charges of theft of government funds and misuse of disability benefits. She also could be fined up to $500,000.
• Harford was accused of defrauding the Old Age, Survivor, and Disability Insurance Program administered by the Social Security Administration. She is to be sentenced next April 15.
• Johnson says Harford has used several last names, including Hagman, Becker and Jensen.

SD man pleads guilty to assaulting federal officer

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota man has pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer.
• Authorities allege that 27-year-old Richard Wolf Guts, of Parmelee, resisted a deputy U.S. marshal and spit on him at the federal courthouse in Rapid City in June.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says Wolf Guts also is known as Gabriel Broken Leg. He faces up to eight years in prison when he is sentenced next Feb. 25.

Drought conditions ease slightly in the Dakotas

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Drought conditions have eased slightly in the Dakotas over the past week.
• The situation remains dire in South Dakota, however, with just under 57 percent of the state in the two worst categories of drought, extreme and exceptional. Last week, slightly more than 57 percent of the state was in those two categories. All of the state is in some form of drought.
• About 95 percent of North Dakota is in some category of drought, but the state no longer has any areas in extreme drought. Last week, about 5 percent of the state was in that category.
