SD man accused of trying to burn down home

• BOX ELDER, S.D. (AP) -- A Box Elder man is accused of trying to burn down his mobile home while his live-in girlfriend and another man were inside.
• Twenty-nine-year-old Joseph Hodges is charged with arson and reckless burning -- charges that could land him in prison for 35 years if he's convicted.
• It was not immediately clear if he had obtained a lawyer.
• Authorities say the two people inside the home when it went up in flames about 5 a.m. Thursday were able to get out safely.

Daugaards announced Halloween trick-or-treat plans

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard and First Lady Linda Daugaard say they expect to hand out up to 2,000 pieces of candy to kids trick-or-treating at the Governor's Mansion on Halloween.
• The Daugaards say they will be passing out candy to children who come by the mansion from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The two will be dressed as President Lincoln and his wife First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln.
• The Daugaards also ask that children and parents follow Halloween safety tips, including trick-or-treating during daylight or with a flashlight and inspecting candy before pieces are eaten.

SD officials seek to attract medical device makers

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota officials plan to attend an event in Minnesota next week as part of an effort to attract companies that make medical devices.
• Representatives of the Governor's Office of Economic Development and officials from Aberdeen, Mitchell, Vermillion and Watertown will attend the Medical Design and Manufacturing Exposition in Minneapolis on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
• State economic development commissioner J. Pat Costello says the officials will seek to persuade companies that make medical devices to expand or relocate in South Dakota.
• Officials say South Dakota currently has 25 businesses that manufacture medical devices and equipment. Those companies employ more than 1,500 people with an average annual salary of more than $36,000.
