New president named at Dakota State University

• MADISON, S.D. (AP) -- The interim president of Dakota State University in Madison was given the job permanently Monday.
• The South Dakota Board of Regents appointed David Borofsky to succeed Douglas Knowlton, who resigned to take a vice chancellor position with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.
• Borofsky most recently was provost and chief academic officer at Denver-based Westwood College, which has 18 sites in six states. He was named interim president at DSU in January and began his duties on campus in February.
• Regents President Kathryn Johnson said Borofsky has exceeded expectations.
• "He has excelled at building relationships between the campus and the Madison community and at raising private funds for the university," she said in a statement. "President Borofsky has been building a positive momentum for Dakota State University, and no one wanted to break that momentum."
• During his career, Borofsky also has served as president of Bates Technical College in Washington state and vice president of Colorado Mountain College. He holds a doctorate in educational administration and supervision from Rutgers, and a master's degree in education and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Springfield College in Massachusetts.
• Borofsky becomes Dakota State's 22nd president.
• "I am impressed with the university faculty and staff and their commitment to quality education and superior service for our students, as well as to the success of Madison," he said in a statement.

Daugaard appoints new First Judicial Circuit judge

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Davison County's state's attorney is the newest judge in South Dakota's First Judicial Circuit.
• Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced Monday he has appointed Patrick Smith to the bench to replace the retired Judge Sean O'Brien. Daugaard says Smith is a well-respected prosecutor and a leader in the Mitchell community.
• Smith has been Davison County's lead prosecutor since 1998.
• The First Judicial Circuit includes Mitchell and most of southeastern South Dakota.
