Fire breaks out in FACS kitchen

• Groton students had some excitement to break up the school day on Friday when a fire broke out in the FACS kitchen during fourth period. Students in Lindsey Tietz's second year FACS class were cooking Indian Tacos as part of their class assignment when a grease fire started on top of one of the stoves.

out the fire with a fire extinguisher that was in the classroom, but not before the smoke set off the fire alarms in the school.
• "Students were evacuated from the building when the alarms went off," Groton Superintendent Laura Schuster said. "They were outside for about 15 to 20 minutes before the all clear was given and they returned to class as normal."
• "The fire was out when the firemen arrived on the scene," Groton Fire Chief Dion Bahr said. "The teacher did everything right in getting the fire put out quickly."

• The firemen checked out the fire to make sure it was completely out and then set up fans in the hallway and at the doors to help vent the smoke out of the building.
• According to Schuster, there was only minimal damage done in the kitchen.
• There were no injuries reported. The Groton Police Department responded to the call along with the Groton Fire Department.
