• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- An officer shot and wounded a woman early Wednesday after she ran over a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper, critically injuring him, and then sped away, authorities said.
• Neither the patrol nor the state attorney general's office released certain details about the incident, including the name of the suspect and the name and law enforcement agency of the officer who shot her.
• Trooper Andrew Steen, 34, tried pulling the 25-year-old suspect's vehicle at around 2:30 a.m. on the west side of Sioux Falls, according to information from the Highway Patrol and state attorney general's office. The driver first drove into Steen's squad car and then into him, Patrol Capt. Kevin Joffer said.
• "He was hit by the suspect's car and as a result he sustained injuries," Joffer said.
• The suspect sped away and led law enforcement officers, including members of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, on a brief chase. An officer whom authorities hadn't publicly identified shot the suspect, and she was apprehended less than a mile from the initial crash site.
• Steen and the suspect were taken to a Sioux Falls hospital.
• Joffer said Steen, an eight-year member of the Highway Patrol, was in critical but stable condition. Attorney General Marty Jackley said the suspect was wounded more than once. Her condition wasn't immediately made available. No charges have been filed in the case, said Joffer.
• He said investigators are trying to reconstruct the scene of the crash. Initial reports were that Steen stopped the suspect because of erratic driving, but it's unclear if alcohol was involved.
• "This is an ongoing investigation. We're trying to put all the pieces together and I don't want to jeopardize that investigation," Joffer said.
