Diverse Group of Stout Hearted Men

• Let's face it, men are built differently than women, and one aspect has to do with communication. Women reach out and get emotional support better than men. Men like to fix things, but we don't

always like to talk about it.
• And with modern nuclear families, all the activities, and add a television dependence, men can sometimes become isolated as old male friendships drift away while wives are speaking on a different wave-link.
• What is missing with this picture? Anthropologists tell us that throughout the ages from every corner of the earth, men have come together with other men to hunt in order to provide for food, to fight in order to protect their village from raiders, and perhaps more ancient than all, to have ritualistic rites of passage for young males in order to teach them how to protect families and villages from threats of all kinds and how to act in society.
• Robert Bly, a Minnesota poet, tells us that men have always needed other men in their lives, and still do, perhaps more than ever. He advises us that a "man's work" is to not deny his inner suppressed "wild man", and at the same time to learn from other men principles such as the work ethic, honesty, loyalty, and especially respect. He needs to learn that virtue and justice is the goal, never violence, betrayal, or abandonment.
