South Dakota man pleads guilty to assault

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota man has pleaded guilty to assault and failing to register as a sex offender.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson announced Friday that 38-year-old Glen Eagle Thunder, of Lower Brule, pleaded guilty to the charges earlier in the week.
• Prosecutors say Eagle Thunder failed to register as a sex offender following his conviction for abusive sexual contact. He faces 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the charge.
• He also acknowledged consuming alcohol and striking a family member on June 22. He faces up to six months in prison and a $5,000 fine for that charge.

S. Dakota teacher charged with fourth-degree rape

• NEW UNDERWOOD, S.D. (AP) -- Bond has been set at $50,000 for a New Underwood high school teacher charged with rape.
• The Pennington County Sheriff's Office says 26-year-old Kyle Keegan was arrested Thursday night in Rapid City. The Rapid City Journal reports that Keegan made an initial court appearance Friday morning, where his bond was set. Keegan is charged with four-degree rape of a victim between the ages of 13 and 15 and sexual contact with a child under 16. Fourth-degree rape carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
• No lawyer was listed on court documents.
• The New Underwood School District website says that Keegan teaches social studies at the high school.
• New Underwood Superintendent Jeff Marlette says he couldn't comment because school officials are still gathering information.

Fire restrictions downgraded in Black Hills area

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Campfires and wood stoves can be used again inside the boundaries of the Black Hills National Forest and the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District.
• Officials say cooler temperatures and higher humidity have moderated the fire danger. Campfires and stove fire restrictions have been lifted for developed recreation sites and improved sites.
