SD National Guard wins workplace safety award

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Safety Council has given the South Dakota National Guard awards for excellence in workplace safety and health.
• The Army and Air National Guard were among 59 employers who were recognized recently at the annual Governor's Safety Awards luncheon.
• State Adjutant General Tim Reisch (RYSH) says the safety awards are important because his top priority is to take care of soldiers and airmen in the South Dakota National Guard.
• The Governor's Safety Awards program recognizes employers with better than average safety records. Winners are recognized at three levels.
• Reisch says the Army Guard won an entry level award for better than average incident rates. The Air Guard received the highest level award for exceptional accomplishment in reducing injuries and illness in the workplace.

Tribal doctor to discuss American Indian health

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- An Oglala Lakota doctor will discuss Native American health disparities during a presentation at South Dakota State University next week.
• Don Warne is a member of the Oglala Lakota Tribe and completed medical school at Stanford University. He will discuss American Indian heath during a presentation at SDSU on Wednesday. The presentation is free and open to the public.
• As a descendent of Native American healers, Warne says he has respect for traditional healing customs. He says the medicine wheel is a symbol of those beliefs.
• The presentation is part of SDSU's Common Read events this semester focusing on Native American topics and issues.

Officials urge residents to reassess flood damage

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- State emergency officials say that South Dakotans who registered with FEMA in 2011 for damage caused by Missouri River flooding may be eligible for additional assistance if further damage has been discovered.
• Residents of Hughes, Stanley, Charles Mix, Yankton and Union counties were eligible to register last year for possible damage claims because of flooding.
