2012 Senior Resource Fair

• The 2012 Senior Resource Fair will be held in Aberdeen at the Ramkota Inn Convention Center on Wednesday, October 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  There will be booths, flu shots, presentations and screenings available.
• Featured presentations will be held throughout the day:
• 9:30 a.m. - "Making a Spending & Savings Plan" - Karen Slunecka, SDSU Extension Field Specialist, Family Resource Management.  Making a plan puts you more in charge of your money.  It helps you stretch your dollars, helps you work towards your goals, helps you spend wisely, and creates a plan to help set aside money for emergencies.  Without a plan, you get lost.  It can help reduce the stress when money gets tight.
• 10:30 a.m. - "Eye Diseases of Aging" - Dr. Curt Wischmeier, M.D., Ophthalmology Associates. Dr. Wischmeier is a graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center and he completed a Retinal Fellowship at Ohio State University.  He specializes in cataracts, corneal disease, detached retinas, diabetes-related eye diseases, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and Lasik surgery.
• 11:30 a.m. - "Intro to Social Media"  Haana Vander Vorst, Library Assistant at the Alexander Mitchell Public Library, will give an overview and introduction of social media, focusing on Facebook and Twitter and will discuss the pros and cons of using these formats.  She will also leave time for questions and answers.
• Local, regional and state public and private agencies representing 60 services will be participating.  Services/agencies invited to participate will focus on the areas of housing, nutrition, and health.  Providers will be on hand to discuss programs which they sponsor as well as support they are able to provide.
• The 2012 Senior Resource Fair will also feature screenings including glaucoma, depression, blood pressure, blood sugar, balance screens or fall assessments, pharmacists to review medicines and answer questions, and Medicare Part D assistance.  Flu shots will also be offered.  Please bring your Medicare or Medicaid card along.
• The Senior Resource Fair is a free event open to the public designed to connect older adults and caregivers with community resources and information they can use. Refreshments will be served throughout the day and door prizes will be provided.
• The Senior Resource Fair is organized by SDSU Extension; Avera St. Luke's Hospital; RSVP/FGP North Central Region; and SD Department of Social Services-Aging & Disabilities Resource Connections.
