• South Dakota's supply of sodium thiopental expired last month, so it's planning to use pentobarbital on Moeller.
• A July court filing by the state suggests South Dakota will obtain its pentobarbital through a compounding pharmacy. Such pharmacies custom-mix solutions, creams and other medications in doses or forms that generally aren't commercially available. The pharmacy's identity and location have been sealed by the court.
• The FDA considers compounding pharmacy products unapproved drugs and does not verify their safety or effectiveness. Compounding pharmacies have come under scrutiny in the wake a deadly meningitis outbreak linked to contaminated injections made by a Massachusetts specialty pharmacy.

US transportation secretary visits Pierre

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Federal Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood traveled to South Dakota's capital on Wednesday to help celebrate the grand opening of the expanded River Cities Public Transit facility.
• The Pierre facility was upgraded using about $5 million in federal funds. It includes a new dispatch center with upgraded scheduling and monitoring technology, and a garage with space to service nearly 100 buses and other transit vehicles.
• "Here in South Dakota and across the United States, these investments in our public transportation infrastructure help reduce maintenance costs and ensure that today's riders and future generations can get to jobs, schools, medical appointments and other destinations," said LaHood, who was joined by Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff and other state and local officials.
• The improved Pierre facility will support public transportation service for people in 11 central South Dakota counties, including those on two American Indian reservations.

SD man sentenced to prison for sex abuse charge

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for having sexual contact with a person incapable of consenting.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson announced Wednesday that 40-year-old Randall Carl Little Thunder was sentenced last week on a charge of sexual abuse.
• Little Thunder, of Parmelee, must also remain on supervised release for five years.
