Corps holding meetings on Missouri River plan

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- The Army Corps of Engineers is holding meetings in the Dakotas on its proposed operating plan for the Missouri River for the coming year.
• Meetings are scheduled Oct. 30 in the North Dakota capital of Bismarck and the South Dakota capital of Pierre. They're among six meetings in five states over four days.
• Corps officials will discuss the proposed operating plan and then field questions and comments.
• The Bismarck meeting is at 1 p.m. at the Civic Center. The Pierre meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Ramkota Hotel.

Crazy Horse celebrates Native American Day

• CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL, S.D. (AP) -- The Crazy Horse Memorial plans to celebrate Native American Day on Monday with a weather permitting mountain blast and a free buffalo stew luncheon.
• Other activities and programs include Native American singers, dancers, artists and storytellers, the South Dakota Symphony's Lakota Music Project and an educational program.
• The memorial is a mountain carving in progress that will honor Oglala Lakota warrior Crazy Horse. Work on the sculpture began in 1948.
• South Dakota is the only U.S. state that celebrates Native American Day. Others observe the day as Columbus Day.

CenturyLink, union fail to reach labor agreement

• DENVER (AP) -- CenturyLink and the union representing 13,000 workers in 13 states in the West and Midwest have failed to reach a contract agreement, but have signed onto a day-to-day extension of the expired pact.
• The Communications Workers of America made the announcement after the existing labor contract expired at 11:59 p.m. Saturday. CWA spokesman Al Kogler said in a statement that negotiations will continue and workers will remain on the job during the extension.
