Lakota author to lead bow-making workshop

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is hosting a Lakota bow-making workshop and presentation for students and the public next week.
• Rosebud Sioux author and speaker Joseph M. Marshall III will present a workshop titled "Life Lesson of the Bow" at the School of Mines Surbeck Center Ballroom on Oct. 10 at 4:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
• The project is funded through the South Dakota Humanities Council. The goal of the program is to highlight programming and support for underrepresented students on the school campus.
• Marshall was born and raised on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. He is a founder of the Sinte Gleska University and has published more than 10 books and appeared in several documentaries.

USD lecture to focus on Hutterite culture

• VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- An author who has extensive knowledge of the Hutterite communities in South Dakota is presenting at the University of South Dakota on Tuesday.
• Joanita Kant will present "Hutterite Communities of South Dakota" at 5 p.m. at the campus' Andrew E. Lee Memorial Medicine & Science Building.
• Kant has had contact with the communities since 1976 and has published several articles and books on the Hutterite culture. Her speech will cover a variety of topics about the communities, including their clothing, food customs and history.
• The event is free and open to the public.
