State Soccer Tournament this week
• This week we will wind up our first season of high school soccer, as an event sanctioned by the South Dakota High School Activities Association. The boys and girls teams will be competing in the state tournament which will be held in Aberdeen at Swisher Field on Thursday Oct. 4th, girls at 3:00 and boys at 8:00.
• A huge thanks goes out to the Groton school board for deciding to sanction our team, when times have been tough and budget cuts have had to be made. Along with the budget cuts came the need for a lot of fundraising. A huge thank you to all of the great local businesses that supported us, in purchasing a banner, as well as everyone else who has contributed to our fundraising efforts.
• Enough cannot be said about the GREAT coaching staff, who have donated their wage back into the program. Not only have they given up their wage but also, to save on our fundraising dollar, have not used busing. Instead they, along with parents, drive 20+ kids as far as Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Mitchell. There have been times when the coaches have recruited family members, and taken more than one vehicle, to get all of the kids back and forth. Mike Becker, head coach of the boys team, doesn't even have anyone playing on the team. We wouldn't have a program without them.
• With the SDHSAA sanctioning the sport, there are no dividing lines. There are eight teams in the boys division and six teams in the girls, with four teams advancing to state. This means we are one of the smallest schools. We have been, and will continue to come up against AA schools in the tournament. Both the boys and girls will compete against Sioux Falls O'Gorman in the first round on Thursday. We would love to see you there.
