University of South Dakota bans smoking on campus

• VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- The University of South Dakota is going smoke free starting in January.
• The university announced Wednesday that the USD Executive Committee voted to ban smoking on campus effective Jan. 9, 2013.
• The USD's Student Government had earlier passed a smoking ban resolution, which the Faculty Senate also endorsed.
• USD President James Abbott says in a news release that while the university wants to be fair to everyone, smoking is a health issue. He says it is the university's responsibility to ensure the campus promotes a healthy lifestyle.
• Smoking is currently not allowed indoors or within 25 feet of university buildings on campus.

SD man sentenced to prison for kidnapping

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A Wanblee man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for kidnapping a man on the Rosebud Indian Reservation.
• U.S. Attorney Brendon Johnson says 52-year-old William Jakeway was sentenced Monday on charges of kidnapping and aiding and abetting. Jakeway pleaded guilty to the charges in June.
• Authorities say Jakeway and his son, Jerett Jakeway, abducted a man in November 2011. They accused the man of stealing a "piece of property" from another family member. Authorities say the Jakeways forced the man out a vehicle at gunpoint and assaulted him.
• Jerett Jakeway is slated to be sentenced next month. He also has pleaded guilty to kidnapping and aiding and abetting.

• Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will make his case against Iran before the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, arguing that time is quickly running out to stop the Islamic Republic from becoming a nuclear power and the threat of force must be seriously considered.
