SD troopers to get upgrades from drug control fund

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Highway Patrol will receive about $215,000 from the state's Drug Control Fund to assist in drug-control operations.
• Attorney General Marty Jackley says the money will be used to buy weapons and other equipment for the patrol.
• The drug control fund consists of money seized during drug arrests and investigations. Funds also are procured through the sale of drug-related assets, such as vehicles, televisions and appliances.
• Jackley says the patrol contributes substantially to the drug-control fund.

ACLU of SD starts campaign to help people vote

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota has started a campaign to provide people with information about how and when to vote.
• Robert Doody, executive director of the organization, says the Let Me Vote Campaign will counter discrimination against American Indians and other minority

groups.
• Doody says the campaign is part of a national ACLU effort to make sure every eligible person can vote. The South Dakota campaign will distribute 40,000 cards about voting rights, make thousands of telephone calls, and sponsor public service announcements on radio.
• Voter workshops also are being held Monday in Rapid City, Tuesday in Pine Ridge, Wednesday in Eagle Butte and Thursday in Fort Thompson.

Emergency crews practicing HazMat response

• MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) -- Emergency officials in Aurora, Davison and Hanson counties are holding a hazardous materials exercise on Saturday.
• Davison County Emergency Manager Jim Montgomery says the exercise at the Davison County Fairgrounds in Mitchell will focus primarily on preparing emergency responders to effectively respond to HazMat incidents.
• Crews from Mitchell, Alexandria, Emery, Mt. Vernon, Rosedale Colony and other areas will respond to several different scenarios, including an explosion, tank truck mishap and an evacuation.
