2 Dakotas schools move up in NAIA football poll

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Two schools in the Dakotas have moved up in the NAIA football coaches' poll.
• Dakota Wesleyan in South Dakota has moved up from 22nd to 19th this week, after a 24-13 win over Briar Cliff on Saturday. Valley City State in North Dakota is up one spot to 20th, after a 41-31 win over Dakota State.
• There is no change in the top five spots in the poll this week. Saint Xavier of Illinois remains No. 1, followed by Marian of Indiana, Georgetown of Kentucky, Morningside of Iowa and Missouri Valley of Missouri.

Disease hitting deer in South Dakota hard

• YANKTON, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota wildlife officials are considering reducing the number of deer hunting licenses this fall because of an outbreak of disease.
• Game, Fish and Parks regional wildlife manager John Kanta tells KEVN-TV in Rapid City that hunters, farmers and game wardens in the state have reported more

than 1,100 cases of the disease commonly known as EHD.
• It stands for epizootic hemorrhagic disease, and it almost always is fatal for white-tailed deer. It's not known to affect people. The Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan newspaper reports that the heaviest deer losses have come in southeastern South Dakota.
• Kanta says wildlife officials are talking about taking away some leftover licenses, or even granting refunds to hunters who already have deer tags. That happened in North Dakota last year.

SD annual homeless count planned for next week

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Housing for the Homeless Consortium will hold its annual statewide count of homeless people next week.
• State coordinator Lisa Bondy says the goal of the Sept. 25 count is to make contact with homeless people and see what help they need. This year's count also will continue to focus on reaching the more rural areas of South Dakota.
• Bondy says volunteers are trained, teamed up and given the supplies and information necessary to conduct the count in their neighborhoods, communities or counties.
• The statewide survey is broken down into three geographical areas -- West River, East River and central South Dakota.
• The 2011 count found 1,453 homeless people in South Dakota. While 369 were women, 707 were men and 377 were children.
