• The city had budgeted $8,800 for a lawn mower for the cemetery. After further review and a recommendation from Terry Herron, city supervisor, the council agreed to get less expensive models instead of the commercial grade models. Two quotes were sought with the low one coming in from Harry Implement of Ferney. The 42" mower would be $2,499. They will try it out and if it works well, a second one will be purchased yet this year. That will eliminate a $10,000 budget item for next year.
• A nice evergreen tree at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Fourth Street was discussed. The tree is owned by Pete and Janet Hoscheid. The truck of the tree is located on their property; however, the branches are creating a visibility issue. City Finance Officer Anita Lowary said that there was an accident at that intersection last year and Chief Mayou had indicated that the tree was an issue. Councilman Scott Hanlon said, "I know it's a beautiful tree, but it's in a bad spot." City Attorney Drew Johnson also pointed out that trees are becoming an issue in Aberdeen and that they are addressing them. He said since the city is aware of the situation, action needs to be taken. The council agreed and a formal letter will be sent to either trim the branches up higher or remove the tree.
• There is a request by the owners of Ken's Food Fair of Groton to allow Sunday liquor sales. Councilman Eddy Opp said that he is opposed to Sunday sales. "We don't need liquor sold on Sunday," he said. The council decided not to take any action until the next meeting when there will be a full council. Councilmen Doug Hamilton and Gary Heitmann were absent at the meeting Monday night.
• The high bid on the Tahoe is at $3,656. If the bid does not reach $9,000 by Thursday, the ad will be pulled off the internet and readvertised locally for bids.
• The 2012 baseball report was presented. The program lost $16,133.78 this year. Some of that loss has come from reduced sales at the concession stand. It was reported that there was not much activity at the complex this year.
• The pool report was presented with the loss of $31,216.34.
• The 2013 appropriation ordinance was approved to the tune of $2,831.790. To see the complete list, refer to the "Official Notices" at the Groton Daily Independent website at www.397news.com, or refer to the weekly Groton Independent.
