Hoffman does not like camping and is deadly afraid of snakes. She did not sleep much the first three nights and had about 200 insect bites in all. Some of the marks still show on her arms. Hoffman said she got so hungry. They were given very little rice and had to survive on jungle food. Their water became slimy and green and they had to walk a fourth of a mile to get it. She ended up drinking it. To change clothes they had to hide behind a tree. They built a hut to sleep in and it fell down three times the first night. It stormed practically every night. They were given machetes and two bags of rice. 
The people who were dropped into the jungle were divided into tribes. One of the men irritated Hoffman. He said something about her not having so much of a German accent for being from South Dakota. She decided to hide his boots. She said she should not have done it. She gave him an expensive new pair of boots later.    
However, she had decided to participate and her motto was "Never Give Up." She said, "Never let the odds keep you from doing something you want to do."
She had decided to apply to be on the show and her husband, Charlie said, "Your going to do what?" However he helped her make the video to apply. Later he told her he thought it was horrible. 
They did not see each other for the duration of the show. They had no cell phones, phones, radios or any other modern conveniences. 
When she first heard she had a chance to be on the show she wondered if she should go. Charlie said, "No Holly, you are getting on the plane and going to LA." 
CBS had them sign a $5 million contract preventing them from suing if they died. They were also sworn to not reveal anything about the tests.
