• The Rosebud Sioux Tribe is looking to see if it can cover the remaining land cost itself, Schmidt said. If not, the cost could be spread among the roughly 20 tribes that make up the Great Sioux Nation, which was fragmented when Native Americans were pushed to reservations and now spans several states, including Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas and Minnesota, as well as Canada.
• The tribes believe the Sioux people were created from the Black Hills. According to part of their spiritual tradition, Pe' Sla is where the Morning Star fell to Earth, killing seven beings that killed seven women. The Morning Star placed the souls of the women into the night sky as "The Seven Sisters," also known as the Pleiades constellation.
• Tribal members hold ceremonies and rituals on the land.
• Schmidt said the tribe hopes to eventually get the land into trust status with the federal government.

Former NFL lineman highlights 2012 SDSU inductees

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- A longtime NFL offensive lineman who was selected to the Pro Bowl on two occasions and won two Super Bowls highlights this year's class of inductees into South Dakota State University's Jackrabbit Hall of Fame.
• Adam Timmerman played 12 years in the NFL, with the Green Bay Packers and St. Louis Rams. He won a Super Bowl crown with each team. He was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 1999 and 2001 seasons.
• Timmerman joins distance runner Joel Brandt, swimmer Brad Reynolds, basketball and softball player Karla Stevenson, and wrestler Don Trapp in the 2012 Hall of Fame class.
• Induction ceremonies are scheduled Oct. 13.

Court schedules Oct. 1 arguments in Berget appeal

•  PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Supreme Court will hear arguments Oct. 1 in the appeal of a man sentenced to death for murdering a State Penitentiary guard during a failed escape attempt.
• The high court has scheduled arguments in the case of Rodney Scott Berget, 50, at the Jeschke Fine Arts Center at the University of Sioux Falls.
• Berget pleaded guilty to killing Ronald "R.J" Johnson on April 12, 2011 -- Johnson's 63rd birthday -- and Circuit Judge Bradley Zell of Sioux Falls sentenced Ber
